The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Fatimah's house but did not find Ali there.He asked, "Where is your cousin?"She replied, "Something happened between us. He became angry with me and went out, and he did not take his nap here."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man, "See where he is."The man came back and said, "Messenger of Allah, he is lying down in the mosque."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to him and found him stretched out, his cloak having slipped off his side, and dust had gotten on him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began wiping the dust off him, saying, "Get up, Abu Turab. Get up, Abu Turab."
جاء رسول الله ﷺ بيت فاطمة فلم يجد عليا في البيت فقال: أين ابن عمك؟ قالت: كان بيني وبينه شيء فغاضبني فخرج، فلم يقل عندي، فقال رسول الله ﷺ للإنسان: انظر أين هو؟ فجاء فقال: يا رسول الله هو في المسجد راقد. فجاء رسول الله ﷺ وهو مضطجع قد سقط رداؤه عن شقه وأصابه تراب فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يمسحه عنه ويقول: قم أبا تراب، قم أبا تراب.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer (441), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2409), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, "Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl bin Saad," and he related it. The wording given is that of Bukhari, and in Muslim's version there is a story, which is that a man from the family of Marwan was appointed governor over Madinah. He said, he summoned Sahl bin Saad and ordered him to curse Ali. Sahl refused, so the governor said to him, "Since you refuse, then just say, 'May Allah curse Abu Turab.'" Sahl said, "Ali had no name dearer to him than Abu Turab, and he used to be delighted whenever he was called by it." The governor said to him, "Tell us about the story of why he was named Abu Turab." So he related it just as had been mentioned before. Bukhari also referred to this story briefly (3703).
