Itban bin Malik, who was among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Ansar and had witnessed Badr, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, my eyesight has weakened, and I lead my people in prayer. When the rains come, the valley between me and them floods, and I cannot reach their mosque to lead them in prayer. I would love it, Messenger of Allah, if you would come and pray in my house, so I could take that spot as a place of prayer."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "I will do so, Allah willing."Itban said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr came the next morning after the day had grown bright. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked permission to enter, and I granted it. He did not sit down until he had entered the house, then he said, "Where in your house would you like me to pray?"I pointed to a corner of the house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said the takbir. We stood and formed a row behind him, and he prayed two rakahs, then gave the salam. We had detained him for a dish of khazirah we had prepared for him. Some men from the people of the neighborhood, a fair number of them, gathered at the house.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer (425), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Mosques (263), both through Ibn Shihab, who said, Mahmud bin Rabi informed me, and he mentioned something similar in a long hadith that has already been given in the Book of Faith, and the wording here is that of Bukhari. As for his saying "khazirah" (with a dotted kha with a fatha, followed by a zay with a kasra, then a ya, then a ra), it is a type of food. Ibn Qutayba said that it is made from meat cut into small pieces, over which a large amount of water is poured, and when it is cooked, flour is sprinkled over it. If it contains no meat, it is called asidah instead. Azhari related from Abu Haytham that khazirah is made from bran, and Bukhari likewise transmitted this from Nadr bin Shumayl in the Book of Foods. As for his saying "the people of the house heard about it," he means the people of the neighborhood, just as it was said, "The best of the households of the Ansar are Banu Najjar," meaning their neighborhood, with the intended meaning being its people. See Fath al-Bari.
