The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was suffering from a severe illness.I said, "Messenger of Allah, my pain has reached the state you can see. I am a man of wealth, and only one daughter will inherit from me. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He said, "No."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A third, and even a third is a lot. To leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them poor, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the pleasure of Allah without being rewarded for it, even the morsel you place in your wife's mouth."
Malik narrated it in the Book of Bequests (4) from Ibn Shihab, from Amir bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas, from his father, and he related the hadith at length, which will come in its place. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1295) from Abdullah bin Yusuf, from Malik with his chain, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Bequests (1628) through another route from Ibrahim bin Saad, from Ibn Shihab, in like manner.
