Someone said to Ibn Abbas, "So-and-so has died," referring to one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. He fell down in prostration. He was asked, "Do you prostrate at this moment?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When you see a sign, prostrate.' And what sign is greater than the passing of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ?"
Abu Dawud (1197) and Tirmidhi (3891) both narrated it through Yahya bin Kathir Anbari Abu Ghassan, who said, "Salm bin Jafar, who was trustworthy (as stated in Tirmidhi), narrated to us from Hakam bin Abban, from Ikrima," and he related it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, we do not know it except through this route."I say, this is as he said, for Salm bin Jafar and his teacher Hakam bin Abban do not rise to the rank of "trustworthy," though they do not fall below the rank of "truthful," even though Azdi criticized Salm bin Jafar without evidence, as Hafiz stated. As for Hakam bin Abban, there is some criticism of him, but it does not prevent his chain from being graded hasan.Bayhaqi (3/343) narrated it through Abu Dawud, and also narrated it through another route from Ibrahim bin Hakam bin Abban, from his father, from Ikrima, with the wording, we heard a sound in Madinah, and Ibn Abbas said to me, "O Ikrima, go and see what this sound is." He said, so I went and found that Safiyya bint Huyayy, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, had died. He said, so I came to Ibn Abbas and found him prostrating even though the sun had not yet risen. I said to him, "Glory be to Allah, you are prostrating and the sun has not risen yet?" He said, "May you have no mother, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not say, 'When you see a sign, prostrate'? What sign is greater than the mothers of the believers departing from among us while we are still alive?"This narration contains Ibrahim bin Hakam bin Abban, who is daif. Dhahabi said in Muhaddhab Sunan al-Kubra (3/1269), "Ibrahim is weak," but this does not harm the grading of the hadith as hasan, because he is corroborated by Salm bin Jafar, and the hadith is hasan even without him. Whoever understood this to be part of the narration of Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi has erred, so take note.
