We were with Saeed bin al-As in Tabaristan when he asked, "Which of you prayed the prayer of fear with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Hudhayfah replied, "I did."So he led one group in one rakah and the other group in one rakah, and they did not make up the missed rakah.
Abu Dawud (1246) and Nasai (1531) both narrated it through the route of Yahya, who said, "Sufyan narrated to us, Ashath bin Salim narrated to me, from Aswad bin Hilal, from Thalaba bin Zahdam," and so he related it. Its isnad is sahih. The disagreement concerns only whether Thalaba bin Zahdam was a companion, and the more correct view is that he belongs to the first generation of the successors.Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1343) through the route of Muhammad bin Bashshar, who is Bundar, and Abu Musa Muhammad bin Muthanna, both from Yahya bin Saeed, with the same wording, and he said, "and they did not make up [the prayer]." This is the wording of Abu Musa's version of the hadith.Bundar said, "from Ashath bin Abu Shatha," and did not say, "and they did not make up [the prayer]." Ashath bin Abu Shatha is the same as [Ashath] bin Salim. Then he narrated from Muhammad [bin Bashshar] and Abu Musa, who both said, "Yahya bin Saeed narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, Abu Bakr bin Abu Jahm narrated to me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah, from Abdullah bin Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed at Dhu Qarad." Abu Musa said, "similar to the hadith of Huzaifa."Bundar related the hadith similarly to the hadith of Huzaifa, and at the end he said, "and they did not make up [the prayer]." End of quote. Thus Ibn Khuzayma made clear the difference between the two hadiths, that of Ibn Abbas and that of Huzaifa. In the hadith of Huzaifa, Abu Musa said, "they did not make up [the prayer]," while Bundar did not say that. And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, Bundar said, "and they did not make up [the prayer]." It appears from this that Abu Musa did not say, in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, "they did not make up [the prayer]."The hadith of Huzaifa was also narrated by Imam Ahmad (23268) and Hakim (1/335), both through the route of Sufyan, except that Ahmad gave the wording of the hadith by reference to the hadith of Ibn Abbas and Zayd bin Thabit. Hakim said, "Its isnad is sahih, though the two of them [Bukhari and Muslim] did not include it," and he made the hadith of Ibn Abbas a corroborating witness for the hadith of Huzaifa. The hadith of Huzaifa has other routes with Imam Ahmad, but they are daif.
