Hafs bin Asim reported, I accompanied Ibn Umar on the road to Mecca. He led us in the noon prayer, performing two units, then he turned and we followed him until he reached his camp. He sat down and we sat with him.His glance happened to fall toward the place where he had prayed, and he saw some people standing in prayer.He asked, "What are these people doing?"I replied, "They are performing voluntary prayers."He said, "If I were going to perform voluntary prayers, I would have completed my prescribed prayer in full. Nephew, I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on journeys, and he never prayed more than two units until Allah took him. I accompanied Abu Bakr, and he never prayed more than two units until Allah took him. I accompanied Umar, and he never prayed more than two units until Allah took him. Then I accompanied Uthman, and he never prayed more than two units until Allah took him. And Allah, Exalted is He, has said, 'Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example' [Ahzab 33:21]."
صحبت ابن عمر في طريق مكة، قال: فصلى لنا الظهر ركعتين، ثم أقبل وأقبلنا معه حتى جاء رحله (أي منزله) وجلس وجلسنا معه. فحانت منه التفاتة نحو حيث صلى. فرأى ناسا قياما. فقال: ما يصنع هؤلاء؟ قلت: يسبحون. قال: لو كنت مسبحا لأتممت صلاتي. يا ابن أخي إني صحبت رسول الله ﷺ في السفر. فلم يزد على ركعتين حتى قبضه الله، وصحبت أبا بكر فلم يزد على ركعتين حتى قبضه الله، وصحبت عمر فلم يزد على ركعتين حتى قبضه الله. ثم صحبت عثمان فلم يزد على ركعتين حتى قبضه الله. وقد قال الله تعالى: {لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة} [سورة الأحزاب: ٢١].
Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on Shortening the Prayer (1102), and Muslim in the Chapter on the Prayer of Travelers (689), both from the hadith of Isa bin Hafs by this chain, and the wording given is that of Muslim, while Bukhari's wording is brief and condensed.They also both narrated it from the hadith of Umar bin Muhammad, from Hafs bin Asim, who said, I fell ill with an illness, and Ibn Umar came to visit me. He said, I asked him about voluntary prayer during travel, and he said, "I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and never saw him perform voluntary prayer, and had I been one to perform voluntary prayers, I would have completed the obligatory prayer in full. Allah Almighty has said, "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example" [Ahzab 33:21]."The wording given is that of Muslim, while Bukhari's wording is brief.
