The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pray witr with five rakats. If you cannot, then with three. If you cannot, then with one. If you cannot, then indicate it with gestures."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: أوتر بخمس، فإن لم تستطع فبثلاث، فإن لم تستطع فبواحدة، فإن لم تستطع فأومي إيماء.
Imam Ahmad (23545) narrated it from Yazid, who said, Sufyan bin Husayn told us, from Zuhri, from Ata bin Yazid Laythi, from Abu Ayub Ansari, and he related the hadith. This same route was also used by Abu Dawud Tayalisi (594), Shashi in his Musnad (1111), and Hakim (1/303), and from him Bayhaqi (3/24).There has been discussion regarding Sufyan bin Husayn's narration from Zuhri. Most of the scholars hold that he is daif in this particular transmission, though reliable in others, because Zuhri's written collection became confused for him. However, he is corroborated in this addition by Abdullah bin Budayl Khuzai, who narrated it from Zuhri in the same way. This was narrated by Tayalisi in his Musnad (594).There is some minor criticism of Abdullah bin Budayl, but his narration is accepted when corroborated by another. With this corroboration, the hadith rises to the level of hasan.
