We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and he said, "This journey is hardship and burden. When one of you prays witr, let him pray two units of prayer afterward. If he wakes up, well and good, otherwise they will count for him."
كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في سفر فقال: إن هذا السفر جهد وثقل، فإذا أوتر أحدكم فليركع ركعتين، فإن استيقظ وإلا كانتا له.

Tabarani reported it in Al-Kabir (2/87), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (692), both from the hadith of Abdullah bin Salih, who said, my teacher Muawiya bin Salih told me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr, from his father, from Thawban, and he mentioned it.Haythami attributed it in Al-Majma (2/163) to Bazzar alone, which is a shortcoming on his part. Then he attributed it again elsewhere (2/246) to Al-Kabir and Al-Awsat without attributing it to Bazzar, which is likewise a shortcoming. In both places he said, "It contains Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of Layth, and there is disagreement about relying on him as evidence." In the second place he added, "There is criticism of him."I say, that is as he said, but he has corroboration. Darimi (1601) reported it, as did Ibn Khuzayma (1106, 1601) and Ibn Hibban (2577), all of them through the route of Abdullah bin Wahb, from Muawiya bin Salih, from Shurayh bin Ubayd, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, with the same wording. However, in Sahih Ibn Hibban the phrase "from his father" fell out between Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr and Thawban, and it is necessary, as it appears in the other sources. Likewise, the wording of Darimi differs, saying "this journey" instead of "this staying up at night," and I believe this too is an error. With this corroboration, the hadith rises to the level of sahih li-ghayrihi.This hadith provides evidence that there is no dislike in performing the two units of prayer after Witr. Ibn Khuzayma said, "Prayer after Witr is permissible for anyone who wishes to pray after it, and the two units that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray after Witr were not exclusive to the Prophet ﷺ apart from his nation, since the Prophet ﷺ commanded us to perform the two units after Witr as a matter of recommendation and merit, not as an obligatory command."Ibn Hibban restricted this to the traveler who fears he will not wake up for tahajjud. But was this the regular practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, holds the view that it was not his regular practice to perform the two units after Witr, and that he only did it once or twice to demonstrate that it was permissible, because of the well known hadiths saying, "Make the last of your prayer at night Witr."Muhammad bin Nasr holds the view that his saying, "Make the last of your prayer at night Witr," was a matter of preference, not obligation, because Ibn Umar is the one who narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Make the last of your prayer at night Witr," and yet he himself used to add an even number of units after his Witr. It is also reported from him that he was asked about someone who got up at night after having already prayed Witr before sleeping, and then prayed two units at a time without repeating Witr to make it even. He replied, "That is fine and good." This response shows that he understood the saying, "Make the last of your prayer at night Witr," as a matter of preference, not obligation.
