Ayesha said, "Khawla bint Hakeem bin Umaya bin Haritha bin al-Awqas al-Sulamiyya, who was married to Uthman bin Mazun, came to visit me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed her shabby appearance and said to me, 'Ayesha, why does Khawla look so unkempt?'I replied, 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she is a woman with no husband. He fasts all day and stands in prayer all night, so she is like a woman with no husband. She has neglected herself and let herself go.'"Ayesha continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent for Uthman bin Mazun. When he came, the Prophet said, 'Uthman, are you turning away from my way?'Uthman replied, 'No, by Allah, Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Rather, it is your way that I seek.'The Prophet said, 'I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. So fear Allah, Uthman, for your family has a right over you, your guest has a right over you, and your own self has a right over you. So fast and break your fast, pray and sleep.'"
ﷺ قالت: دخلت علي خويلة بنت حكيم بن أمية بن حارثة بن الأوقص السلمية- وكانت عند عثمان ابن عائشة، مظعون-: قالت فرأى رسول الله ﷺ بذاذة هيئتها، فقال لي: ياعائشة، ما أبذ هيئة خويلة؟ قالت: فقلت: يا رسول الله ﷺ، امرأة لا زوج لها يصوم النهار ويقوم الليل فهي كمن لا زوج لها، فتركت نفسها وأضاعتها، قالت: فبعث رسول الله ﷺ إلى عثمان بن مظعون فجاءه، فقال: يا عثمان، أرغبة عن سنتي؟ قال: فقال: لا والله يا رسول الله ﷺ! ولكن سنتك أطلب، قال: فإني أنام وأصلي، وأصوم وافطر، وأنكح النساء، فاتق الله يا عثمان، فإن لأهلك عليك حقا، وإن لضيفك عليك حقا، وإن لنفسك عليك حقا، فصم وأفطر، وصل ونم.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (26308) from Yaqub (bin Ibrahim bin Saad Zuhri), who said, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Hisham bin Urwa narrated to me, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is truthful but known to conceal his sources, though here he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, which removes any suspicion of concealment in his case.Abu Dawud also narrated it (1369) from Ubaydullah bin Saad, who said, my uncle narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, with the same account but shortened, and in this version Ibn Ishaq did not explicitly state that he heard it directly. The uncle of Ubaydullah bin Saad is Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad.
