The Prophet ﷺ went out one night and came upon Abu Bakr , who was praying with his voice lowered. He then passed by Umar bin Khattab, who was praying with his voice raised. When the two of them later gathered with the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Abu Bakr, I passed by you while you were praying with your voice lowered."Abu Bakr replied, "The One I was confiding in heard me, Messenger of Allah."Then he said to Umar, "I passed by you while you were praying with your voice raised."Umar answered, "Messenger of Allah, I wake the drowsy and drive off Satan."Hasan added in his version of the report that the Prophet ﷺ then said, "Abu Bakr, raise your voice a little," and he said to Umar, "Lower your voice a little."
Abu Dawud (1330) narrated it from Abu Husayn bin Yahya Razi, who said, Asbat bin Muhammad narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Its isnad is hasan, due to the discussion surrounding Muhammad bin Amr, though he is one whose hadith is hasan.
