While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque, a man came in riding a camel. He made the camel kneel inside the mosque, tethered it, and then asked those present, "Which of you is Muhammad?"The Prophet ﷺ was reclining among them, so we said, "This fair-skinned man who is reclining."The man said to the Prophet ﷺ, "I am going to question you, and I will be hard on you in my questioning, so do not hold it against me."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ask whatever you wish."The man said, "I ask you by your Lord and the Lord of those before you, has Allah sent you to all of mankind?"He answered, "By Allah, yes."The man said, "I implore you by Allah, has Allah commanded you that we pray the five prayers in the day and night?"He answered, "By Allah, yes."The man said, "I implore you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month of the year?"He answered, "By Allah, yes."The man said, "I implore you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our wealthy and distribute it among our poor?"The Prophet ﷺ answered, "By Allah, yes."The man then said, "I believe in what you have brought, and I am the messenger of those of my people behind me. I am Dimam bin Thalaba, of the brethren of Banu Saad bin Bakr."
بينما نحن جلوس مع النبي ﷺ في المسجد دخل رجل على جمل فأناخه في المسجد ثم عقله ثم قال لهم: أيكم محمد؟ والنبي ﷺ متكئ بين ظهرانيهم، فقلنا: هذا الرجل الأبيض المتكئ، فقال الرجل للنبي ﷺ: إني سائلك فمشدد عليك في المسألة، فلا تجد علي في نفسك. فقال: سل عما بدا لك. فقال: أسألك بربك ورب من قبلك، آلله أرسلك إلى الناس كلهم؟ فقال: اللهم نعم، قال: أنشدك بالله، آلله أمرك أن نصلي الصلوات الخمس في اليوم والليلة؟ قال: اللهم نعم. قال: أنشدك بالله، آلله أمرك أن تصوم هذا الشهر من السنة؟ قال: اللهم نعم. قال: أنشدك بالله، آلله أمرك أن تأخذ هذه الصدقة من أغنيائنا فتقسمها على فقرائنا؟ فقال النبي ﷺ: اللهم نعم. فقال الرجل: آمنت بما جئت به، وأنا رسول من ورائي من قومي وأنا ضمام بن ثعلبة أخو بني سعد بن بكر.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Knowledge (63), from Abdullah bin Yusuf, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Saeed, that is Maqburi, from Sharik bin Abdullah bin Abu Nimr, that he heard Anas bin Malik, and he related the hadith.Bukhari said, Musa and Ali bin Abdul-Hameed narrated it, from Sulayman, from Thabit, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, with this. End of quote.I say, Sulayman is Ibn Mughira, and through his route Muslim related it in the Book of Faith (12), from Amr bin Muhammad bin Bukayr Naqid, who said, Hashim bin Qasim Abu Nadr narrated to us, who said, Sulayman bin Mughira narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas bin Malik, who said, "We were forbidden to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about anything, so we liked it when a sensible man from the desert people would come and ask him while we listened. So a man from the desert people came and said, 'Muhammad! Your messenger came to us and told us that you claim Allah has sent you.' He said, 'He told the truth.' He said, 'Who created the heavens?' He said, 'Allah.' He said, 'Who created the earth?' He said, 'Allah.' He said, 'Who erected these mountains and placed in them what He placed?' He said, 'Allah.' He said, 'By the One who created the heavens and created the earth and erected these mountains, did Allah send you?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Your messenger claimed that we owe five prayers in our day and night.' He said, 'He told the truth.' He said, 'By the One who sent you, did Allah command you with this?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Your messenger claimed that we owe zakat on our wealth.' He said, 'He told the truth.' He said, 'By the One who sent you, did Allah command you with this?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Your messenger claimed that we owe the fast of the month of Ramadan every year.' He said, 'He told the truth.' He said, 'By the One who sent you, did Allah command you with this?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Your messenger claimed that we owe pilgrimage to the House for whoever is able to find a way to it.' He said, 'He told the truth.'Then he turned to leave, saying, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not add to them nor subtract from them.'"Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "If he has told the truth, he will surely enter Paradise."He also said, Abdullah bin Hashim Abdi narrated to me, who said, Bahz narrated to us, who said, Sulayman bin Mughira narrated to us, from Thabit, who said, Anas said, "We were forbidden in the Quran from asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about anything," and he related the hadith in the same way.Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (153/1), commenting on Bukhari's statement, "Musa and Ali bin Abdul-Hameed narrated it, from Sulayman," "Bukhari only cited it as a suspended narration because he did not rely on his teacher Sulayman bin Mughira, and he was contradicted regarding connecting it, for Hammad bin Salama related it from Thabit as a mursal narration, and Daraqutni preferred that view. Some have claimed that this is a defect preventing the hadith from being graded sahih, but that is not so, rather it shows that the hadith of Sharik has a basis." End of quote.And Bukhari's statement, "with this," means with this meaning, otherwise the wording differs.
