Nasai (1873) narrated it from Suwayd bin Nasr, who said, Abdullah told us, who said, Yunus informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Saaib bin Yazid informed me, and he mentioned it.Ahmad (15724) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (7/176) also narrated it, both through Abdullah, who is Ibn Mubarak, with the same chain, and Ahmad's wording is, "That is a man who does not pillow the Quran." Its chain of transmission is sahih.As for what has been said, that he is "Makhrama bin Shurayh," this is a mistake, as the Hafiz said in al-Isabah (2/147), because Tabarani narrated it through Numan bin Rashid, who related it from Zuhri, and Numan bin Rashid had poor memory. There are other chains for it, but they are all flawed, and the correct view is that he is Shurayh Hadrami. This Shurayh Hadrami was among the best companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as Ibn Abdul-Barr said in al-Istiab, then he mentioned the hadith.His saying, "does not pillow the Quran," with "the Quran" in the accusative case as the object, means that he does not place the Quran under his head and sleep upon it, but rather stands in prayer at night with what he has memorized of the Quran, continuing steadily in reciting it. This is also how Nasai understood it, for he included the hadith in Sunan al-Kubra (1307) in the chapter on encouraging night prayer. It contains a rebuke of anyone who treats the Quran as a pillow and neglects night prayer and tahajjud.
