Jurayy used to devote himself to worship in his hermitage. One day his mother came to him.Humayd said, Abu Rafi described to us how Abu Hurairah had described, in the manner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how Jurayy's mother stood when she called him. She placed her palm above her brow, then raised her head toward him, calling out to him.She said, "Jurayy, I am your mother. Speak to me."She found him praying, and he said to himself, "O Allah, my mother or my prayer?" He chose his prayer, and she went away. Then she returned a second time and said, "Jurayy, I am your mother. Speak to me."He said, "O Allah, my mother or my prayer?" He chose his prayer. So she said, "O Allah, this is Jurayy, and he is my son. I spoke to him but he refused to answer me. O Allah, do not let him die until you show him the prostitutes."
Muslim narrated it in the book of Piety and Kinship (2550), from Shayban bin Farroukh, who said, "Sulayman bin Mughira related to us, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abu Rafi, from Abu Hurairah," and he mentioned it. This wording is his.Bukhari narrated it in the book of the Prophets (3436) through another route from Abu Hurairah, but he shortened the story of Jurayj and his mother there. He narrated it in the book of Action During Prayer (1206) with the story of Jurayj in full, except that he related it there as a suspended chain from Layth, saying, "Jafar related to me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Hurmuz, from Abu Hurairah," and he mentioned the story. This Layth is Ibn Saad, whom Bukhari did not meet directly, and Ismaili connected the chain, saying, "Abu Bakr Marwazi informed us, Asim bin Ali related to us, Layth bin Saad related to us with his chain of transmission."It can be derived from this hadith that speaking during prayer was not forbidden under the law of Banu Israil, and this is why, when Jurayj did not answer, his mother's prayer against him was answered. Likewise, speech was permitted in our own law until the words of the Most High were revealed, "Maintain the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience" [Baqarah 2:238], after which it was forbidden.Bukhari included this hadith in the book of Action During Prayer, and placed it under the chapter heading "When a mother calls her child during prayer," but he did not state the outcome of the conditional clause, because scholars differ over whether the prayer is invalidated or not. The majority of scholars held that one should not answer, and that if one does answer, the prayer is invalidated. Uzai and some of the companions of Malik said that if the speech is minimal, such as saying "I am in prayer," the prayer is not invalidated, by analogy with men glorifying Allah during prayer, but if the speech is extensive, the prayer is invalidated. As for one performing a voluntary prayer, he may interrupt his prayer, since answering one's mother takes precedence over a voluntary prayer.
