The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer, and he began to reach out with his hand. Khalaf said, he was reaching forward during the prayer. When he finished, the people asked him about it, and he said, "Satan was throwing sparks of fire at me to distract me from my prayer, so I seized him. Had I taken hold of him, he would not have escaped me until he was tied to one of the pillars of the mosque for the children of Madinah to look at him."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (21000) from Abdul-Razzaq and Khalaf bin Walid, who both said, Israil told us, from Simak, that he heard Jabir bin Samura, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain is hasan because of Simak bin Harb. The hadith is also found in the Musannaf of Abdul-Razzaq (2338) by this route. Tabarani also narrated it in Al-Kabir (1925) through the route of Khalaf bin Walid, with the same wording. As for what Tabarani (2053), Daraqutni (1/365), and Bayhaqi (2/450) narrated through routes from Mufaddal bin Salih, from Simak, with the wording, "We were praying an obligatory prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he clasped his hand during the prayer. When he finished the prayer, we said, Messenger of Allah, did something happen during the prayer? He said, 'No, except that Satan wanted to pass in front of me, so I choked him until I felt the coolness of his tongue on my hand. By Allah, had it not been for what my brother Sulayman had already done before me, he would have been tied to one of the pillars of the masjid, so that the children of the people of Madinah could look at him.'"This is daif, for it contains Mufaddal bin Salih, whom Bukhari and Abu Hatim declared weak, as stated in Al-Majmaa (2/61).
