The Prophet ﷺ came out wearing a red garment, with his clothing tucked up, and led the people in two units of prayer.
خرج النبي ﷺ في حلة حمراء مشمرا صلى بالناس ركعتين.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Prayer (376), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (503), both through Umar bin Abu Zaida, from Awn bin Abu Juhayfa, from his father, who mentioned it in a long hadith. It was mentioned earlier in the Book of Purification, in the chapter on using the leftover water from wudu. See also the collected chapters on the sutrah.Bukhari's chapter heading "Praying in a Red Garment" indicates permissibility. The Hanafis disliked praying in a red garment, citing as evidence the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr, who said, "A man wearing two red garments passed by the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him, but the Prophet did not return his greeting."Abu Dawud (4069) and Tirmidhi (2807) both related this through Ishaq bin Mansur, who said, Israil told us, from Abu Yahya, from Mujahid, from Abdullah bin Amr, who mentioned the hadith. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib from this angle." That is the end of his remark.I say, in its chain is Abu Yahya al-Qattat, with a qaf and a doubled ta, the Kufan. Munziri said, "His hadith cannot be relied upon as evidence." Ibn Main said, "There is weakness in his hadith." Ibn Hibban said, "His errors were severe and frequent, to the point that he followed the path of those who are not upright in their narrations."Al-Hafiz said, "This is a hadith with a daif chain. Even though some copies of Tirmidhi state that he said, 'Hasan hadith,' because such and such is in its chain, and even supposing it were something that could be relied upon as evidence, it is contradicted by something stronger than it. Moreover, it is a specific incident, so it is possible that the failure to return the greeting was for some other reason." That is the end of his remark.
