The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, or perhaps it was Umar who said, "If any of you has two garments, let him pray in both of them. If he has only one garment, let him wrap it around his waist and not drape it over himself like the Jews do."
قال رسول ﷺ، أو قال: قال عمر: إذا كان لأحدكم ثوبان فليصل فيهما، فإن لم يكن إلا ثوب واحد فليتزر به، ولا يشتمل اشتمال اليهود.
Abu Dawud (635) narrated it from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Ayub, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain is sahih, and Ibn Khuzayma (769) also graded it sahih, narrating it through the route of Abdul-Wahhab bin Ata, from Saeed bin Abu Aruba, from Ayub, with the wording, "When one of you prays in a single garment, let him tie it around his waist, and do not wrap yourselves as the Jews wrap themselves."He also narrated it (766) through the route of Abu Bahr Abdul-Rahman bin Uthman Bakrawi, who said, Saeed bin Abu Aruba narrated to us, from Ayub, from Nafi, who said, Ibn Umar saw me praying in a single garment and said, "Did I not give you two garments to wear?" I said, "Yes indeed." He said, "Tell me, if I sent you on an errand, would you go out wearing only one garment?" I said, "No." He said, "Allah is more deserving that you adorn yourself for Him." Then he said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "When one of you has only a single garment, let him tie it around his waist, and let him not wrap himself in it the way the Jews wrap themselves." End of narration. In these narrations Nafi did not waver as he did in Abu Dawud's narration between raising it up to the Prophet ﷺ and stopping it at Umar bin Khattab, and taking what is certain is preferable to taking what is doubtful. This has been confirmed as being marfu (raised to the Prophet) in another narration recorded by Imam Ahmad (96) from Yaqub, who said, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, saying, Nafi, his freed slave, narrated to me that Abdullah bin Umar used to say, "When a man has only a single garment, let him wrap it around his waist and then pray, for I heard Umar bin Khattab say that." He would also say, "Do not drape yourselves in a single garment the way the Jews do."Nafi said, "If I told you that he attributed that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would hope I had not lied."Bayhaqi (2/236) narrated it through the route of Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayub, from Nafi, who said, I reckoned this for him regarding the fodder of the mounts. He then mentioned the hadith and said, The Messenger of Allah said, or Umar said, and I am fairly certain he said the Messenger of Allah said, then he mentioned the hadith.Bayhaqi said, Layth bin Saad also narrated it from Nafi in this same way, with the doubt. I say, his statement "I am fairly certain" is sufficient to establish that it is raised to the Prophet ﷺ, for had the balance not tilted toward it being marfu, he would not have said such a thing. As for his statement, "the wrapping of the Jews," this refers to covering the whole body with the garment and letting it hang down without lifting its edge. This is how Khattabi explained it.Musa bin Uqba narrated it from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "When one of you prays, let him wear both his garments, for Allah is more deserving that one adorn himself for Him." This was narrated by Bazzar in Kashf Astar (590), and by Bayhaqi (2/236).The matter of adornment has also been reported as the words of Ibn Umar, as mentioned earlier, and what is preserved regarding this hadith is the narration of whoever reported it with doubt as to whether it is marfu, as stated by Daraqutni.
