The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said, "You will travel through this evening and night, and you will reach water tomorrow, Allah willing."So the people set off, none waiting for another. Abu Qatada said, "While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was traveling on, until the night was halfway through, I was riding beside him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew drowsy and leaned to one side off his mount. I came to him and propped him up without waking him, until he was upright on his mount again. Then he went on until the night was deep into its course, and he leaned again. I propped him up without waking him until he was upright on his mount. Then he traveled on until, in the last part of the night, he leaned over more sharply than the first two times, almost falling off. I came to him and propped him up. He raised his head and asked, 'Who is this?'I said, 'Abu Qatada.'He asked, 'How long have you been traveling like this beside me?'I said, 'I have been traveling this way since the start of the night.'He said, 'May Allah preserve you, just as you preserved His Prophet.'Then he said, 'Do you think we might be hidden from the people?'Then he said, 'Do you see anyone?'I said, 'Here is a rider.' Then I said, 'Here is another rider,' until we had gathered together as seven riders. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then turned off the road, set down his head, and said, 'Watch over our prayer for us.'The first to wake was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with the sun already on his back. We got up alarmed. He said, 'Mount up.'So we mounted and traveled on. When the sun had risen high, he dismounted and called for a small water vessel I had with me, which contained a little water. He performed a light ablution from it, and some water was left in it. Then he said to Abu Qatada, 'Keep watch over your water vessel for us, for it will have a story.'Then Bilal called the adhan for the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakahs, then prayed the morning prayer, doing as he did every day. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted and we mounted with him.We began whispering to one another, 'What is the expiation for what we did in neglecting our prayer?'Then he said, 'Do you not have an example in me?' Then he said, 'There is no negligence in sleep. Negligence is only on the one who does not pray a prayer until the time of the next prayer comes. Whoever does that, let him pray it when he becomes aware of it, and the next day let him pray it at its proper time.'Then he said, 'What do you think the people have done?'Then he said, 'The people woke up and missed their Prophet, and Abu Bakr and Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is behind you, he would not leave you behind." But the people said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is ahead of you." If they obey Abu Bakr and Umar, they will be guided rightly.'We reached the people when the day had grown long and everything had become hot. They were saying, 'Messenger of Allah, we are dying of thirst.'He said, 'There is no destruction upon you.' Then he said, 'Bring me my small drinking cup.' He called for the water vessel, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began pouring while Abu Qatada gave the people to drink. As soon as the people saw the water in the vessel, they crowded around it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Behave well. Each of you will drink his fill.'So they did. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept pouring while I gave them to drink, until no one was left but myself and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ poured and said to me, 'Drink.'I said, 'I will not drink until you drink, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'The one who serves the people is the last of them to drink.'So I drank, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank. Then the people came to the water, satisfied and quenched."Abdullah bin Rabah said, "I was narrating this hadith in the congregational mosque when Imran bin Husayn said, 'Look, young man, how you narrate, for I was one of the riders that night.'I said, 'Then you know the hadith better.'He asked, 'Who are you from?'I said, 'From the Ansar.'He said, 'Narrate, for you know your own narrations better.'So I narrated to the people. Imran said, 'I witnessed that night, and I did not realize that anyone had memorized it as you have memorized it.'"
Muslim narrated it in "The Mosques" (681), from Shayban bin Farroukh, who said, "Sulayman, meaning Ibn Mughira, narrated to us, Thabit narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Rabah, from Abu Qatada, who said," and he mentioned it.His statement, "If it is the next day, he should pray it at its time," means that the time of the dawn prayer had not shifted to after sunrise, so the next day they should pray it at its usual time. But Abu Dawud narrated it (438) through Khalid bin Samir, who said, "Abdullah bin Rabah Ansari came to us from Madinah and said, 'Abu Qatada narrated to me,'" and he mentioned the hadith in full, and in it, "Whoever among you reaches the dawn prayer in sound condition the next day should make up its like along with it."This indicates that the missed prayer is made up twice, once immediately upon remembering, and once the next day at its usual time. Some scholars held this view. Khattabi said, "It seems that the command here is for recommendation, so that one may attain the merit of the time in making up the prayer,"but Hafiz responded to him in Fath al-Bari (2/71), saying, "None of the early scholars held that this was recommended, rather they considered the hadith to be a mistake on the part of its narrator."Tirmidhi and others reported this from Bukhari. He said, "This is supported by what Nasai narrated from the hadith of Imran bin Husayn, that they said, 'Messenger of Allah, shall we not make it up at its time the next day?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No, Allah forbids you from riba yet takes it from you.'" End quote.I say, this mistake may be from Khalid bin Samir Sadusi, for he was described as having confusion in his memory, so perhaps he narrated the hadith by its meaning and erred in it, since he was not corroborated in this hadith of his.As for what Hafiz referred to by his saying, "Does Allah not forbid you from riba yet take it from you," in the hadith of Imran with Nasai, I did not find it either in the Kubra or the Sughra. But Imam Ahmad narrated it (19964) from Yazid, who said, "Hisham informed us." And Rawh said, "Hisham narrated to us, from Hasan, from Imran bin Husayn," and he mentioned the story of the Prophet's ﷺ stopping to rest, and in it they said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we not repeat it at its time the next day?" He said, "Does Allah forbid you from riba and yet accept it from you?"Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it (994), and from him Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (1461), from Muhammad bin Yahya Dhuhli, who said, "Yazid bin Harun narrated to us," with the same wording.Ibn Hibban (2650) and Bayhaqi (2/217) also narrated it from other routes from Hisham with the same wording.Rawh is Ibn Abada, and Hisham is Ibn Hassan. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that it includes Hasan Basri, who was a mudallis and narrated with "an", and it has been said that he did not hear from Imran bin Husayn, but Hakim, in Mustadrak (1/274), affirmed that his hearing from Imran bin Husayn was sound. And in Musnad Ahmad (19965), following the previous narration, "Muawiya narrated to us, Zaida narrated to us, from Hisham, who said, 'Hasan claimed that Imran bin Husayn narrated to him,' saying, 'We traveled by night with the Prophet ﷺ," and he mentioned the hadith. The referencing of this hadith has already preceded in the chapters on the adhan. Chapter, the adhan for the missed prayer.
