The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in one of his gatherings when Jibreel came and sat before him, placing his palms upon the knees of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me about Islam."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Islam is that you submit your face to Allah , and that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."He asked, "If I do that, am I a Muslim?"He answered, "If you do that, you are a Muslim."He said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me about faith."He replied, "Faith is that you believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, that you believe in death and in life after death, that you believe in Paradise and the Fire, the Reckoning and the Scale, and that you believe in destiny, all of it, its good and its evil."He asked, "If I do that, have I believed?"He answered, "If you do that, you have believed."He said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me about excellence."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Excellence is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, for though you do not see Him, He sees you."He said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me about the Hour."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Glory be to Allah! It is among five matters of the unseen which none knows but Allah. 'Indeed, Allah has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware' [Luqman 31:34]. But if you wish, I shall tell you of its signs that come before it."He said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah, tell me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you see the slave-girl giving birth to her mistress, or her master, and you see the shepherds of sheep competing in tall buildings, and you see the barefoot and naked becoming the leaders of the people, these are among the signs of the Hour and its portents."He asked, "Messenger of Allah, who are the shepherds of sheep, the barefoot, the hungry, the destitute?"He replied, "The Arabs."
Imam Ahmad (2924) narrated it from Abu Nadr, "Abdul-Hameed narrated to us, Shahr bin Hawshab narrated to us, Abdullah bin Abbas narrated to me," and he mentioned the hadith. Abdul-Hameed is Ibn Bahram Fazari, who used to memorize the hadith of Shahr bin Hawshab. Yahya Qattan said, "Whoever wants the hadith of Shahr should go to Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram."Abdullah bin Abu Husayn also narrated it, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Amir, or Abu Amir, or Abu Malik, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned the hadith in full, and it contains some questionable elements. Abdullah bin Abu Husayn is Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Husayn Nawfali, and although he is trustworthy, he was inconsistent in this hadith. Imam Ahmad (17167) narrated it from Abu Yaman, from Shuayb, who said, "Abdullah bin Abu Husayn narrated to us," who said, "Shahr bin Hawshab narrated to me," with the same content.Shahr bin Hawshab is disputed, but the hadith has come through another route with a hasan chain, as narrated by Bazzar, in Kashf Astar (24), via Ahmad bin Muallaa Aadami, "Jabir bin Ishaq narrated to us, Sallam Abu Mundhir narrated to us, from Asim, from Abu Dhubyan, from Ibn Abbas," and he mentioned the hadith similarly. Its chain is hasan on account of Asim, who is Ibn Bahdala.Haythami said in al-Majma (1/39), "Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it with similar wording, except that in Bazzar's version, Jibreel came to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of a pale traveling man. And in Ahmad's chain is Shahr bin Hawshab."
