The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and led us in the Maghrib prayer in our mosque. When he finished with the closing salutation, he said, "Perform these two units of prayer in your homes as the voluntary prayer after Maghrib."
أتانا رسول الله ﷺ فصلى بنا المغرب في مسجدنا. فلما سلم منها قال: اركعوا هاتين الركعتين في بيوتكم للسبحة بعد المغرب.
Ahmad narrated it (23624) from Yaqub, who said, my father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada Ansari narrated to me, from Mahmud bin Labeed, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for he explicitly stated that he heard the narration directly. Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (1200) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, except that he did not explicitly state that he heard it directly. Ibn Majah narrated it (1165) through the route of Ismail bin Ayyash, from Ibn Ishaq, with the same wording. In it is the teacher of Ibn Majah, namely Abdul-Wahhab bin Dahhak, who is discarded as a narrator. Abu Hatim accused him of lying, and Abu Dawud said, he used to fabricate hadith. The narration of Ismail bin Ayyash from non-Syrian narrators is daif.It has been established as sound from Ayesha and Ibn Umar and others that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray two units of prayer after Maghrib at home. Likewise, what has been narrated from Saad bin Ishaq bin Kaab bin Ujra, from his father, from his grandfather, is not sound. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the Maghrib prayer in the masjid of Banu Abdul-Ashhal, and when he finished praying, some people stood up to pray additional voluntary prayers. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform this prayer in your homes."Abu Dawud narrated it (1300), and Tirmidhi (604), and Nasai (1600), all of them from Ibn Abu Wazir, who said, Muhammad bin Musa Fitri narrated to us, from Saad bin Ishaq, from Kaab, and he mentioned the same. Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it through this same route in his Sahih (1201), and in it is Ishaq bin Kaab bin Ujra, whose condition is unknown, and no one attested to his reliability except Ibn Hayan. Therefore Tirmidhi said, this is a gharib hadith which we do not know except through this route. What is sound is what has been narrated from Ibn Umar, who said, the Prophet ﷺ used to pray the two units of prayer after Maghrib in his house. On this subject there is also a narration from Zayd bin Khalid Juhani, from the Prophet ﷺ, "Do not turn your homes into graves, pray in them." Imam Ahmad narrated it (17030), and Tabarani in al-Kabir (5278) and (5279) and (5280), both of them through the route of Abdul-Malik bin Abu Sulayman, from Ata, from Zayd bin Khalid Juhani, and he mentioned the same. Its chain of transmission is daif because of a break in it, for Ata, namely Ibn Abu Rabah, did not hear from Zayd bin Khalid, as Ibn Madini said in Jami Tahsil (237). Ata bin Abu Rabah has another hadith from Zayd bin Khalid which will come later in the book of fasting.Likewise, what has been narrated from Ayesha, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Make part of your prayer in your homes, and do not turn them into graves for yourselves," the correct view regarding it is that it is a mursal narration. Malik narrated it in Qasr Salah (73) from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn Lahia narrated it, saying, Abu Aswad narrated to us, from Urwa, from Ayesha. Ibn Lahia is among those whose memory became confused, and the one who narrated from him is Hasan bin Musa Ashyab, who is among those who narrated from him after the confusion set in. Imam Ahmad narrated it (24366) through his route.Abu Yaala narrated it (4867) from Abdul-Rahman bin Salih, from Abdul-Rahim bin Sulayman, from Hisham, from his father, from Ayesha, with the wording, "Make part of your prayer in your homes." Abdul-Rahman bin Salih is Azdi Qataki, "truthful but inclined to Shiism," as stated in Taqrib. Daraqutni said, the sound version is from Hisham, from his father, as a mursal narration. Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Hatim relayed from his father, who said, they do not say in this hadith, "from Ayesha," Ilal (135/1).Abu Aswad is Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Nawfal, who is called the orphan of Urwa.
