The Prophet ﷺ said, "The likeness of a house in which Allah is remembered and a house in which Allah is not remembered is like the living and the dead."
ى، عن النبي ﷺ قال: مثل البيت الذي يذكر الله فيه، والبيت الذي لا يذكر الله فيه، مثل الحي والميت.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Supplications (6407), and Muslim in the Book of the Prayer of Travelers (779), both from Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Burayd bin Abdullah, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, and he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Muslim. As for the wording of Bukhari, it is, "The likeness of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember his Lord is like the living and the dead."Hafiz said, This is how it appears in all copies of Bukhari. Muslim narrated it from Abu Kurayb, who is Muhammad bin Ala, Bukhari's own teacher in this hadith, with the same chain mentioned, but with the wording, "The likeness of the house in which Allah is remembered and the house in which Allah is not remembered is like the living and the dead." Ismaili and Ibn Hibban (854) in his Sahih likewise narrated it, both from Abu Yaala, from Abu Kurayb. Abu Awana likewise narrated it from Ahmad bin Abdul-Hameed, and Ismaili also narrated it from Hasan bin Sufyan, from Abdullah bin Barad, and from Qasim bin Zakariya, from Yusuf bin Musa and Ibrahim bin Saeed Jawhari and Musa bin Abdul-Rahman Masruqi and Qasim bin Dinar, all of them from Abu Usama.The convergence of all these narrators on this wording indicates that it is what Burayd bin Abdullah, the teacher of Abu Usama, actually narrated, and Bukhari's being alone in transmitting the wording mentioned, apart from the rest of the students of Abu Kurayb and the students of Abu Usama, suggests that he narrated it from his memory and was somewhat imprecise in his narration.Fath al-Bari (11/210)
