The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Instruct your children to pray when they are seven years old, discipline them for neglecting it when they are ten, and separate them in their sleeping places."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: مروا أولادكم بالصلاة وهم أبناء سبع سنين، واضربوا عليها وهم أبناء عشر سنين، وفرقوا بينهم في المضاجع.
Abu Dawud (495) narrated it from Muammal bin Hisham, meaning al-Yashkuri, who said, our teacher Ismail told us, from Sawwar Abu Hamza. Abu Dawud said, he is Sawwar bin Dawud Abu Hamza al-Muzani al-Sayrafi, from Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, and he related the hadith. Abu Dawud said, Zuhayr bin Harb told us, Waki told us, Dawud bin Sawwar al-Muzani told me, with his chain of transmission and its meaning, and he added, "And when one of you marries off his servant, whether a male slave or a hired worker, he should not look at what is below the navel or above the knee." Abu Dawud said, "Waki erred in his name, and Abu Dawud Tayalisi narrated this hadith from him and said, Abu Hamza Sawwar al-Sayrafi told us." End of quote.I say, Imam Ahmad likewise stated this explicitly in his Musnad (6689), after narrating the hadith from Waki, where he said, Dawud bin Sawwar told us. Abdullah bin Ahmad said, my father said, and Tufawi, Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman, said regarding this hadith, Sawwar Abu Hamza, and he erred in it. End of quote.I say, his statement "he erred in it" refers to Waki, because Imam Ahmad said, "Sawwar Abu Hamza, there is no harm in him, Waki narrated from him but reversed his name." End of quote.Hakim also recorded it (1/197) through the route of Sawwar, with the same wording. It has been related from Ishaq bin Rahawayh that he said, "When the narrator from Amr bin Shuayb is trustworthy, then he is like Ayub narrating from Nafi, from Ibn Umar."I say, it is as he said, for the leading scholars relied upon the hadith of Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, scholars such as Bukhari, Ahmad, Ibn Madini, and others. Ibn Main said, "Amr bin Shuayb is trustworthy." However, the summary judgment concerning him is that his hadith is hasan. This is also the view of Nawawi and other leading scholars. As for Sawwar, with a doubled waw and ending in ra, he is Ibn Dawud al-Muzani, Abu Hamza al-Sayrafi al-Basri, his hadith is likewise hasan, and Nawawi graded his chain of transmission hasan in al-Majmu (10/3).
