The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek forgiveness for the front row three times, and for the second row once.
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يستغفر للصف المقدم ثلاثا، وللثاني مرة.
Ibn Majah (996) reported it, saying, Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba told us, saying, Yazid bin Harun told us, saying, Hisham Dastawai informed us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from Khalid bin Madan, from Irbaz, and he then narrated the hadith. Hakim also transmitted it from this same route (1/214) and said, "The isnad is sahih." This is how Ibn Majah transmitted it from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, but what is found in the Musannaf (1/379) is from Shayban, from Yahya, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, that Khalid bin Madan told him, that Jubayr bin Nufayr told him, that Irbaz bin Sariya told him, and he then narrated the hadith.Ibn Hibban (2158) reported it from this route as well, placing "Jubayr bin Nufayr" between Khalid bin Madan and Irbaz. Imam Ahmad transmitted it by two routes, once from Yahya bin Saeed and Waki, from Hisham, without Jubayr bin Nufayr (17141), and again by the route of Shayban, mentioning Jubayr bin Nufayr (17156).Hafiz did not state in his Tahdhib that Khalid bin Madan heard from Irbaz. On this basis, Shayban established this isnad by mentioning Jubayr bin Nufayr between Khalid bin Madan and Irbaz. Nasai (817) transmitted it likewise, except that his version contains Baqiya bin Walid, who is well known for tadlis and taswiya, and he narrated with an "an" formula from Buhayr bin Saad, from Khalid bin Madan, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Irbaz. However, Ismail bin Ayyash corroborated him, saying, Buhayr bin Saad told me, from Khalid bin Madan, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, with this same chain. Baghawi transmitted this in his commentary (3/372).
