Mughira bin Shuba reported,

Mughira reported that he went on the expedition to Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Mughira said, "Before the dawn prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to relieve himself, and I carried a small water vessel with him."Mughira continued, "I went along with him until, when we returned, we found that the people had put Abd al-Rahman bin Awf forward to lead them in prayer, and he had already begun praying with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught one of the two units of prayer and prayed the final unit with the congregation. When Abd al-Rahman bin Awf gave the closing salam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to complete his prayer. This alarmed the Muslims, and they began saying 'Subhan Allah' repeatedly. When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to them and said, 'You have done well,' or he said, 'You have done the right thing,' praising them for praying at its proper time."In another narration, Mughira said, "I wanted to hold Abd al-Rahman back from leading, but the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Leave him.'"

عن المغيرة بن شعبة

أنه غزا مع رسول الله ﷺ تبوك، قال المغيرة: فبرز رسول الله ﷺ قبل الغائط نحملت معه إداوة قبل صلاة الفجر. قال المغيرة: فأقبلت معه حتى بعد الناس قد قدموا عبد الرحمن بن عوف فصلى لهم، فأدرك رسول الله ﷺ إحدى الركعتين، فصلى مع الناس الركعة الأخرة، فلما سلم عبد الرحمن بن عوف، قام رسول الله ﷺ يتم صلاته، فأفزع ذلك المسلمين. فأكثروا التسبيح، فلما قضى النبي ﷺ صلاته أقبل عليهم، ثم قال: أحسنتم، أو قال: قد أصبتم، يغبطهم أن صلوا الصلاة لوقتها. وفي رواية: قال المغيرة: فأردت تأخير عبد الرحمن، فقال النبي ﷺ: دعه.
