The poor came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "The wealthy people have taken away the highest ranks and the everlasting bliss. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they have surplus wealth with which they perform Hajj and Umrah, fight in jihad, and give in charity."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not tell you of something by which, if you adopt it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and no one after you will catch up with you, and you will be the best of those among whom you live, except for one who does the same? Glorify Allah, praise Him, and magnify Him thirty-three times after every prayer."We then differed among ourselves. Some of us said, "We should glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and magnify Him thirty-four times."So I went back to him, and he said, "You say, 'Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest,' until each of them reaches thirty-three."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Adhan (843), and Muslim in the Book of Mosques (595), both through the route of Mutamir, from Ubaydullah, from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned something similar, and the wording given is Bukhari's. Muslim added, "The poor among the migrants came." Abu Salih said, "So the poor among the migrants returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Our brothers, the people of wealth, heard what we did, so they did the same.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'That is the favor of Allah which He gives to whomever He wills.'"His saying "dutuur" is with the damma on both the dal and the tha, being the plural of duthr with a fatha followed by a sakin, meaning abundant wealth. His saying "an-naeem al-muqeem" means everlasting, referring to the bliss of the hereafter and the life of Paradise.Muslim said, "Others besides Qutayba added, in this hadith from Layth, from Ibn Ajlan, that Sumayy said, 'I related this hadith to some of my family, and he said, "You erred. He only said, 'You glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Allah thirty-three times, and magnify Allah thirty-three times.'" So I went back to Abu Salih and told him that, and he took my hand and said, "Allah is greatest, glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, Allah is greatest, glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah," until he reached, from all of them together, thirty-three.'"Then Muslim said, "Umaya bin Bistam Ayshi related to me, Yazid bin Zuray related to us, Rawh related to us, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the people of wealth have gone off with the highest ranks and the everlasting bliss,'" similar to the hadith of Qutayba from Layth, except that he inserted into the hadith of Abu Hurairah the statement of Abu Salih, "then the poor among the migrants returned," to the end of the hadith. And he added in the hadith, Suhayl says, "Eleven, eleven." So altogether, the total is thirty-three.Ibn Hajar said in Nataij Afkar (2/273), "Muslim's arrangement implies that Suhayl had two differing versions of the hadith. It has been said that the variation originated from Suhayl himself, since he was not corroborated on this point, and it has already been explicitly stated on the authority of Abu Hurairah that every phrase is to be said thirty-three times." End of quote. The summary of the matter is that his saying "thirty-three times" could mean the total for all of them combined, in which case, if divided, each phrase would be eleven, which is what Suhayl bin Abu Salih understood, as related by Muslim, and likewise by Bukhari, except that he said, "You glorify Allah after every prayer ten times, praise Him ten times, and magnify Him ten times," though Suhayl was not corroborated on that. The more evident meaning is that the total applies to each individual phrase, meaning you glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Allah thirty-three times, and magnify Allah thirty-four times, completing a hundred. This is what the other hadiths attest to, as will follow. The name of the one who said, "The people of wealth have gone off," will also follow, and he is Abu Dharr Ghifari .
