He was in a gathering that included his father, Abu Hurairah, Abu Usayd, and Abu Humayd al-Saidi. They were discussing the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that he would give the salutation to his right and to his left.
أنه كان في مجلس، كان فيه أبوه وأبو هريرة وأبو أسيد وأبو حميد الساعدي وأنهم تذاكروا صلاة رسول الله ﷺ فذكروا أنه سلم عن يمينه وعن شماله.

Ibn Hibban (1866) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (6/158) both narrated it from the hadith of Abu Hammam Walid bin Shuja bin Walid Sakuni, who said, my father narrated to us, who said, Abu Khaythama narrated to us, who said, Hasan bin Hurr narrated to us, who said, Isa bin Abdullah bin Malik narrated to me, from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata, one of the Banu Malik, from Abbas bin Sahl bin Saad Saadi, and he related it.In Ibn Hibban's version it came with the wording, when he gave the salam, he said to his right, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah," and said to his left, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah."Its isnad is hasan, for Abu Walid, who is Shuja bin Walid, has been criticized regarding his memory, and the sourcing of this hadith was already detailed earlier in the chapter on raising the hands.
