The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque and came upon a man who had just finished his prayer and was reciting the tashahhud, saying, "O Allah, I ask You, Allah, the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor is begotten, and to whom none is equal, that You forgive me my sins, for You are the Forgiving, the Merciful."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has been forgiven, he has been forgiven, he has been forgiven," three times.
Abu Dawud (985) and Nasai (1301) both narrated it through Abdul-Warith, who said, Husayn Muallim narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from Hanzala bin Ali, that Mihjan bin Adraa told him a similar account. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ibn Khuzayma (724) and Hakim (1/267) also graded it sahih, both narrating it through Abdul-Warith with the same wording. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs."
