I spent the night at the home of my maternal aunt Maymuna bint Harith, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was spending the night with her. I saw him get up to relieve himself. He went to the waterskin, untied its fastening, performed a light ablution between the two forms of ablution, and then returned to his bed and slept.He got up again, went to the waterskin, untied its fastening, and performed a complete ablution. Then he stood and prayed, saying in his prostration, "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light below me, light above me, light to my right, light to my left, light before me, light behind me, and grant me an abundance of light."Then he slept until he was breathing audibly, and Bilal came and woke him for the prayer.
بت عند خالتي ميمونة بنت الحارث، وبات رسول الله ﷺ عندها فرأيته قام لحاجته، فأتى القربة فحل شناقها، ثم توضأ وضوءا بين الوضوئين، ثم أتى فراشه فنام، ثم قام قومة أخرى، فأتى القربة فحل شناقها، ثم توضأ وضوءأ هو الوضوء، ثم قام فصلى، وكان يقول في سجوده: اللهم اجعل في قلبي نورا، واجعل في سمعي نورا، واجعل في بصري نورا، واجعل من تحتي نورا، واجعل من فوقي نورا، وعن يميني نورا وعن يساري نورا، واجعل أمامي نورا، واجعل خلفي نورا، وأعظم لي نورا ثم نام حتى نفخ، فأتاه بلال فأيقظه للصلاة.
Nasai (1120) narrated it from Hannad bin Sari, from Abu Ahwas, from Saeed bin Masruq, from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Rushdin - who is Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas, and mentioned the hadith. Nasai stated explicitly that this supplication was one the Prophet ﷺ used to say during sujud.Muslim also narrated it from Hannad, in the chapter on the prayer of the traveler (188/763), but he did not mention it with this level of detail, rather he mentioned it in the hadith of Shubah, from Salama bin Kuhayl, in which it says, "He began saying it during his prayer, or during his sujud."Bukhari narrated it in the book of supplication (6316) from the hadith of Sufyan, from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Kurayb, and mentioned the supplication, though he likewise did not state explicitly that he used to say it during sujud.This hadith was mentioned earlier in the chapter on wudu, and it will come again in the chapter on supplication as well.
