I used to spend the night with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, bringing him water for his ablution and whatever else he needed. He said to me, "Ask."I said, "I ask for your companionship in Paradise."He asked, "Or anything besides that?"I replied, "That is what I want."He said, "Then help me to grant you that by making frequent prostrations."
This was narrated by Muslim in the Book of Prayer (489) via Uzai, who said, Yahya bin Abu Kathir told me, Abu Salama told me, Rabia bin Kaab Aslami told me, and he related something similar. This hadith serves as evidence for those who say that increasing the number of sujud is better than lengthening the standing. However, since it conflicts with the hadith of Jabir in Sahih Muslim, in which the Prophet ﷺ said, "The best prayer is the one with the longest qunut," Imam Ahmad refrained from giving preference to either view. What is meant by qunut here is the standing position.Imam Ahmad also narrated it (16579) through another chain, more complete than this one, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata told me, from Nuaym bin Mujmir, from Rabia bin Kaab, who said, I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and attend to his needs throughout the day, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray the last night prayer. Then I would sit at his door when he entered his house, thinking that perhaps some need might arise for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I kept hearing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah and praise be to Him," until I grew tired and either went back or my eyes overcame me and I fell asleep. He said, One day, seeing how devoted and attentive I was in serving him, he said to me, "Ask me, Rabia, and I shall give you." I said, Let me consider my situation, O Messenger of Allah, and then I will let you know. He said, So I reflected within myself, and realized that this world is fleeting and will come to an end, and that I have a provision in it that will sustain me and come to me regardless. So I said, I will ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something concerning my afterlife, for he holds with Allah the highest standing. He said, So I came to him, and he said, "What have you decided, Rabia?" I said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I ask that you intercede for me with your Lord so that He may free me from the Fire. He said, "Who told you to ask this, Rabia?" I said, No, by the One who sent you with the truth, no one told me to ask this. But when you said, ask me and I shall give you, and since you hold with Allah the highest standing, I reflected on my situation and realized that this world is fleeting and will come to an end, and that I have a provision that will come to me regardless, so I said, I will ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something concerning my afterlife. He said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent for a long while, then said to me, "I shall do so, but help me by devoting yourself to much sujud."Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who has explicitly stated that he heard it directly.
