He saw the Prophet ﷺ praying, and whenever he was in an odd-numbered rakah of his prayer, he would not rise until he had settled into a sitting position.
أنه رأى النبي ﷺ يصلي، فإذا كان في وتر من صلاته لم ينهض حتى يستوى قاعدا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (823), on the authority of Muhammad bin Sabbah, who said, Hushaym informed us, who said, Khalid Haddan informed us, on the authority of Abu Qilaba, who said, Malik bin Huwayrith informed us, and he mentioned it.This sitting is called the sitting of rest, as Ibn Qayyim said in his Zad (1/240). Hafiz said in Fath (2/302), "Shafii and a group of the people of hadith adopted this, and there are two narrations from Ahmad. Khallal mentioned that Ahmad went back to holding this view," meaning he abandoned his position of not sitting, because of the hadith of Malik bin Huwayrith, as is found in Mughni (1/213).
