He was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "A man came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the mosque." He then mentioned the hadith about the man praying poorly, followed by the Prophet's ﷺ instruction to him, in which he said, "Then recite the Mother of the Quran and whatever else Allah wills that you recite."
وكان من أصحاب النبي ﷺ قال: جاء رجل ورسول الله ﷺ في المسجد، فذكر الحديث في إساءته للصلاة ثم ذكر توجيه النبي ﷺ له وجاء فيه: ثم أقرأ بأم القرآن، وبما شاء الله أن تقرأ.
Abu Dawud (859) narrated it, saying, Wahb bin Baqiya told us, from Khalid, from Muhammad, meaning Ibn Amr, from Ali bin Yahya bin Khallad (from his father), from Rifa bin Rafi, and he related it. The hadith will come in full in the chapter on moderation in ruku and sujud.Imam Ahmad (18995) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun, who said, Muhammad bin Amr informed us with it, and in it, "Then recite Umm Quran, then recite whatever you wish."Ibn Hibban (1787) graded it sahih, narrating it through this same route. Its chain is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Amr, who is Ibn Alqama, whose hadith is hasan.Muhammad bin Ajlan corroborated him with this same wording, from Ali bin Yahya bin Khallad with it, and in it, "from his father, from his uncle Rifa."
