The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the muezzin says, 'Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest,' let one of you say, 'Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.'"He continued until he said, "When the muezzin says, 'Come to prayer,' let him say, 'There is no power and no strength except through Allah.' Then when the muezzin says, 'Come to success,' let him say, 'There is no power and no strength except through Allah.' Then when the muezzin says, 'Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest,' let him say, 'Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.' Then when the muezzin says, 'There is no god but Allah,' let him say, 'There is no god but Allah,' from his heart, and he will enter Paradise."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إذا قال المؤذن: الله أكبر، الله أكبر. قال أحدكم: الله أكبر، الله أكبر. إلى أن قال: فإذا قال: حي على الصلاة. قال: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله. ثم قال: حي على الفلاح. قال: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله. ثم قال: الله أكبر، الله أكبر. قال: الله أكبر، الله أكبر. ثم قال: لا إله إلا الله. قال: لا إله إلا الله من قلبه دخل الجنة.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Prayer (385) via Hafs bin Asim bin Umar bin Khattab, from his father, from his grandfather Umar bin Khattab, who related the hadith in full.His statement "hawl" means movement, that is, I have no movement or ability except by the will of Allah. The expression for their saying "la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" is called "al-hawqalah," the ha and waw coming from "hawl" and the qaf from "quwwah" and the lam from the name of Allah, the Exalted. This is similar to "basmalah" from "bismillah," and "hamdalah" from "al-hamdu lillah."
