The Prophet ﷺ was concerned about the prayer and how to gather the people for it. It was suggested to him, "Raise a banner when the time of prayer arrives, and when the people see it, they will inform one another." But this did not please him. Then the qun was mentioned to him, meaning the horn. Ziyad said, it was the horn of the Jews. This did not please him either, and he said, "It is from the practice of the Jews."Then the bell was mentioned to him, and he said, "It is from the practice of the Christians."So Abdullah bin Zayd bin Abd Rabbih departed, sharing the concern of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was shown the call to prayer in his sleep. The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, saying, "Messenger of Allah, while I was between sleeping and waking, someone came to me and showed me the call to prayer."Now Umar bin Khattab had seen it before this but had kept it to himself for twenty days. Then he informed the Prophet ﷺ, who said to him, "What kept you from telling me?"He replied, "Abdullah bin Zayd got to it before me, so I felt embarrassed."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Bilal, get up and do whatever Abdullah bin Zayd instructs you." So Bilal made the call to prayer.Abu Bishr said, Abu Umayr informed me that the Ansar claim that had Abdullah bin Zayd not been ill that day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have made him the muezzin.
Abu Dawud (498) narrated it from Abbad bin Musa Khutalli and Ziyad bin Ayub, though the report of Abbad is more complete, both of whom said, Hushaym narrated to us from Abu Bishr, and Ziyad said, Abu Bishr informed us, from Abu Umayr bin Anas, and he related it.Its chain is sahih. As for Abu Umayr bin Anas bin Malik, some scholars have made remarks about him, but he is nonetheless trustworthy. Ibn Saad said of him, "He was trustworthy, with few narrations." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and the Hafiz said, "Trustworthy." He also declared this chain sahih in Fath al-Bari (2/81), where he said, Abu Umar bin Abdul-Barr said, "The story of Abdullah bin Zayd was narrated by a group of companions with different wordings but closely related meanings, and these are among the good versions, this one being the best of them."
