They used to pray Maghrib with the Prophet ﷺ, then return to their families at the farthest part of Madinah, shooting arrows and still able to see where their arrows landed.
إنهم كانوا يصلون مع النبي ﷺ المغرب، ثم يرجعون إلى أهاليهم إلى أقصى المدينة، يرمون ويبصرون مواقع سهامهم.
Nasai (520) narrated it. He said, Muhammad bin Bashshar told us, he said, Muhammad told us, he said, Shuba told us, from Abu Bishr, who said, I heard Hassan bin Bilal narrate from a man from Aslam among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he then related the hadith. Its chain is hasan, for Hassan bin Bilal is truthful, and Ibn Madini and others confirmed his reliability. Abu Bishr is Jafar bin Iyas, Abu Bishr the son of Abu Wahshiya, who is trustworthy, though Shuba considered him weak regarding Habib bin Salim and regarding Mujahid. End of discussion. However, Shuba was contradicted in this chain, for Hushaym narrated it from Abu Bishr, from Ali bin Bilal, from a group of the Ansar who said, "We used to pray Maghrib with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then we would leave and shoot arrows at each other until we reached our homes, and the places where our arrows fell were never hidden from us." Ahmad narrated this (16415), and he also narrated it from Affan, that is, Ibn Muslim, who said, Abu Awana told us, he said, Abu Bishr told us, from Ali bin Bilal Al-Laythi, who said, "I prayed with a number of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they told me that they used to pray Maghrib with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then they would set off shooting arrows at each other, and the places where their arrows fell were never hidden from them, until they reached their homes at the far end of Madinah."So Hushaym and Affan differed from Shuba, both narrating from Abu Bishr, from Ali bin Bilal, while Shuba, as mentioned before, narrated from Abu Bishr saying, "I heard Hassan bin Bilal." Some scholars considered the two to be one and the same person, while those who distinguished between them said that Ali bin Bilal is the more likely correct version. Bukhari held this view, for he mentioned the hadith in the biographical entry of Ali bin Bilal in Tarikh al-Kabir (6/263) by way of Abu Awana, then mentioned it by way of Shuba from Abu Bishr, who said, "I heard Hassan bin Bilal," and then said, "The first version is more likely correct."Ali bin Bilal was not regarded favorably, so on that basis the chain would be daif. So either we should consider the two names to be one person, or we should say that perhaps Abu Bishr narrated from both of them, since he explicitly stated that he heard from Hassan bin Bilal, who is truthful, as mentioned earlier. For this reason, Haythami graded its chain hasan after attributing the hadith to Imam Ahmad, from Ali bin Bilal, in Majma al-Zawaid (1/310), and because of the disagreement over Hassan bin Bilal and Ali bin Bilal, he included it among the additional narrations, for otherwise the hadith would not have met his criteria.
