The Prophet ﷺ said, "Banu Salama, will you not count your footsteps?"Mujahid said regarding His statement, "And We record what they have sent forward and their footprints" [Ya-Sin 36:12], "It means their footsteps."
قال النبي ﷺ: يا بني سلمة ألا تحسبون آثاركم. قال مجاهد: في قوله: {ونكتب ما قدموا واثرهم} [سورة يس ١٢]. قال خطاهم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (655), and in another narration (656), that Banu Salama wanted to move from their homes and settle near the Prophet ﷺ. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked that Madinah be left desolate, so he said, "Will you not count your footsteps?" Mujahid said, their footsteps, meaning their traces, are made by walking on the ground with their feet.He narrated the first version with a connected chain, but in the second he said, "Ibn Abu Maryam said," and then mentioned his chain of transmission.This is how it appears in the narration of most transmitters, but in the narration of Abu Dharr it reads, "and Ibn Abu Maryam narrated to us."Abu Naeem said in al-Mustakhraj, "Bukhari mentioned it without a connecting narration," meaning as a suspended report.Hafiz said, "This is what is correct."I say, he then narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of Madinah (1887) with a connected chain, from Ibn Salam, in the same manner, adding, "So they stayed."
