The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three practices from the days of ignorance that the people of Islam will not abandon, wailing over the dead, seeking rain through the stars, and such-and-such."I asked Saeed, "What is that?"He replied, "The tribal call of the days of ignorance, 'O family of so-and-so, O family of so-and-so.'"
Imam Ahmad narrated it (7560) from Rubai bin Ibrahim, who said, Abdul-Rahman - meaning Ibn Ishaq - told us, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3141), and he narrated it through Abu Khaythama, who said, Rubai bin Ibrahim told us, with the same wording, except that he said the third time, "التعاير" (mutual mockery), which means casting aspersions on lineages. It seems he was uncertain at first and said, "the claim of pre-Islamic ignorance," then he recalled and confirmed it and said, "mutual mockery." Or perhaps by his statement "the claim of pre-Islamic ignorance" he meant boasting about lineages and disparaging them. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq, who is the Madinan, resident of Basra, whose hadith is hasan, and he is not the Wasiti, Abu Shayba, the daif one.See the other hadiths in the Book of Funerals, the chapter on the prohibition of wailing.
