I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa, when Abu Musa asked, "Abu Abdur-Rahman, what do you say about a man who becomes ritually impure and cannot find water for a month? How should he perform the prayer?"Abdullah replied, "He should not perform tayammum, even if he does not find water for a month."Abu Musa said, "Then what about this verse in Surat al-Maidah, 'and you find no water, then perform tayammum with clean earth' [Maidah 5:6]?"Abdullah said, "If they were granted this concession in this verse, then as soon as the water felt cold to them, they would resort to performing tayammum with earth."Abu Musa said to Abdullah, "Have you not heard what Ammar said? 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, and I became ritually impure but could not find water, so I rolled in the dust as an animal rolls. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned this to him, and he said, It would have been enough for you to do like this with your hands. He then struck the ground once with his hands, then wiped his left hand over his right and the backs of his palms and his face.'"Abdullah replied, "Do you not see that Umar himself was not satisfied with Ammar's account?"
Bukhari narrated it in tayammum (347) and Muslim in menstruation (368), both through Abu Muawiya, from Amash, from Shaqiq, who then mentioned the hadith. The wording is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is, he struck the ground once with his palm, then shook it off, then wiped the back of his palm with his left hand, or the back of his left hand with his palm, then wiped his face.Yaala added, from Amash, from Shaqiq, I was with Abdullah and Abu Musa, and Abu Musa said, "Did you not hear what Ammar said to Umar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you, and I became junub and rolled myself in the dust, so we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said, 'It would have been enough for you to do this,' and he wiped his face and hands once."
