The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the night prayer until Umar called out to him, "The prayer! The women and children have fallen asleep."He came out and said, "No one on earth is waiting for it except you."The narrator added, "At that time, the prayer was performed only in Medina."
أعتم رسول الله ﷺ بالعشاء حتى ناداه عمر: الصلاة؛ نام النساء والصبيان. فخرج فقال: ما ينتظرها من أهل الأرض غيركم. قال: لا يصلى يومئذ إلا بالمدينة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer Times (569) and Muslim in the Book of Masjids (638), both through Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, from Ayesha, who said, then she mentioned the hadith. In another version with Muslim, "until the people of the masjid slept."Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "This is understood to refer to a sleep that does not invalidate wudu, which is the sleep of someone sitting with his seat firmly settled. This is evidence that sleep of this kind does not invalidate wudu, and this is what most scholars have said, and it is the sahih position in our school."
