I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The bridge will be set across the middle of Hell. Upon it are thorns like the thorns of the Saadan plant. Then the people will be permitted to cross. Some will pass safely as Muslims, some will be wounded by it but pass through, and others will be caught by it and plunged headlong into the Fire. When Allah has finished judging between His servants, the believers will miss certain men who used to be with them in the world, who prayed as they prayed, gave zakat as they gave it, fasted their fasts, performed their pilgrimage, and joined their military expeditions. They will say, 'Our Lord, there were servants from among Your servants who were with us in the world. They prayed our prayer, gave our zakat, fasted our fasts, performed our pilgrimage, and joined our expeditions, yet we do not see them.'He will say, 'Go to the Fire, and whomever you find there from among them, bring them out.'They will find them seized by the Fire according to their deeds. Some have been taken up to their feet, some up to the middle of their shins, some up to their knees, some up to their waists, some up to their chests, and some up to their necks, but the Fire does not touch their faces. They will pull them out and cast them into the Water of Life."Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, what is the Water of Life?"He replied, "It is the washing of the people of Paradise. They will sprout forth as a seed sprouts." On another occasion he said, "As a seed sprouts in the debris carried by a flood. Then the prophets will intercede for everyone who used to bear witness sincerely that there is no god but Allah, and they will bring them out of it. Then Allah will show His mercy to those remaining in it, and He will not leave a single servant in it who has even the weight of a grain of faith in his heart without bringing him out."
Ahmad (11081) narrated it, and this is his wording, as did Ibn Khuzayma in Tawhid (648), and Ibn Majah (4280) in abridged form, and Hakim (4/585–586), all of them through Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Ubaydullah bin Mughira bin Muayqib narrated to me, from Sulayman bin Amr bin Abdul-Atwari, one of Banu Layth, who had been an orphan raised under the care of Abu Saeed, who said, I heard Abu Saeed say, and he mentioned it.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not report it."I say, its chain of transmission is hasan, because it contains Muhammad bin Ishaq, who has clearly stated that he heard it directly. As for Hakim's statement, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim," this is a mistake on his part, because Muslim did not report from Ubaydullah bin Mughira bin Muayqib or from his teacher Sulayman bin Amr bin Abdul-Atwari, though both of them are trustworthy. On this subject there are other hadiths mentioned in the book of Faith and the book on the Description of the Resurrection.
