Hasan Basri reported,

Maqil bin Yasar fell into a serious illness, and Ibn Ziyad came to visit him. Maqil said, "I am about to tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'Whoever is entrusted with the care of subjects and does not surround them with sincere counsel will not find the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance can be perceived from a journey of a hundred years away.'"Ibn Ziyad said, "Why did you not tell me this before now?"Maqil replied, "Even now, were it not for the position you hold, I would not have told you."

عن الحسن قال

مرض معقل بن يسار مرضا ثقل فيه، فأتاه ابن زياد يعوده، فقال: إني محدثك حديثا سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من استرعي رعية، فلم يحطهم بنصيحة، لم يجد ريح الجنة، وريحها يوجد من مسيرة مائة عام. قال ابن زياد: ألا كنت حدثتني بهذا قبل الآن؟ قال: والآن لولا الذي أنت عليه لم أحدثك به.
