He entered Madinah and came upon a man surrounded by people. He asked, "Who is this?"They replied, "Abu Hurairah."So I drew near to him until I sat in front of him while he was speaking to the people. When he fell silent and was alone, I said to him, "I ask you by truth and by right to tell me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which you understood and learned."Abu Hurairah said, "I will do so. I shall tell you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, which I understood and learned."Then Abu Hurairah let out a sob, paused for a while, then recovered and said, "I shall tell you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me in this very house, with no one present but him and me."Then Abu Hurairah let out another sob, then recovered, wiped his face, and said, "I shall tell you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, while he and I were in this house with no one present but him and me."Then Abu Hurairah let out another sob, then recovered and wiped his face, and said, "I will do so. I shall tell you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, while I was with him in this house with no one present but him and me."Then Abu Hurairah let out a violent sob and collapsed forward on his face. I held him up for a long while, and then he recovered and said,"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, 'When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah will descend to His servants to judge between them, and every nation will be kneeling. The first to be summoned will be a man who memorized the Quran, a man who fought in the path of Allah, and a man of abundant wealth.Allah will say to the reciter, "Did I not teach you what I revealed to My Messenger?"He will reply, "Yes, my Lord."Allah will ask, "Then what did you do with what you learned?"He will say, "I used to recite it through the hours of the night and the hours of the day."Allah will say to him, "You have lied." The angels will also say to him, "You have lied." And Allah will say, "Rather, you wanted it to be said that So-and-so is a reciter, and that has indeed been said."Then the man of wealth will be brought, and Allah will say to him, "Did I not grant you abundance until I left you in need of no one?"He will reply, "Yes, my Lord."Allah will ask, "Then what did you do with what I gave you?"He will say, "I used to maintain ties of kinship and give in charity."Allah will say to him, "You have lied." The angels will also say to him, "You have lied." And Allah Most High will say, "Rather, you wanted it to be said that So-and-so is generous, and that has indeed been said."Then the one who was killed in the path of Allah will be brought, and Allah will say to him, "For what cause were you killed?"He will say, "I was commanded to wage jihad in Your path, so I fought until I was killed."Allah Most High will say to him, "You have lied." The angels will also say to him, "You have lied." And Allah will say, "Rather, you wanted it to be said that So-and-so is courageous, and that has indeed been said."'"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck my knee and said, "Abu Hurairah, those three will be the first of Allah's creation with whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection."
Tirmidhi narrated it (2382), and Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (2482), as did Ibn Hibban (408), through various routes from Abdullah bin Mubarak, who said, Haywa bin Shurayh informed us, Walid bin Abu Walid Abu Uthman Madaini informed me, that Uqba bin Muslim told him, that Shufayy Asbahi told him, and he related it.Walid Abu Uthman said, Ala bin Abu Hakeem told me that he was a swordbearer for Muawiya. A man came in to see him and told him this on the authority of Abu Hurairah. Muawiya said, "This has been done to people like these, so what about those who remain among the people?"Then Muawiya wept so intensely that we thought he was dying, and we said, "This man has brought us something terrible." Then Muawiya recovered, wiped his face, and said, "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth," "Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments, We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they will not be deprived. Those are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire, and lost is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do." [Hud 11:15–16]Its isnad is sahih. Walid bin Abu Walid is among the narrators relied upon by Muslim, Abu Zura deemed him trustworthy, and Dhahabi followed him in Kashif. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith." So he said, but the correct view is that it is sahih. I have separated this hadith from the previous one because it contains some additional sentences not found there.
