I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution. He washed his face three times, washed his hands three times, wiped his head and ears, and washed his feet. On another occasion, I saw him perform ablution washing each part only once.
رأيت رسول الله ﷺ توضأ، فغسل وجهه ثلاثا، وغسل يديه ثلاثا، ومسح برأسه وأذنيه، وغسل رجليه، ورأيته مرة أخرى توضأ مرة مرة.
Tabarani narrated it in Al-Awsat, Majma Bahrayn (404), and Tahawi in Sharh Maani (1/30), both by way of Saeed bin Sulayman Wasiti, from Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad Darawardi, who said, Amr bin Amr narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi, from his father, from Abu Rafi, who said, and then he related it.Abdullah bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi is, in my view, hasan al-hadith so long as nothing objectionable comes from him. Muslim and Nasai narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy, and a group of narrators transmitted from him. Haythami said in Al-Majma (1/231), "Its narrators are the narrators of the sahih." There is disagreement over the report from Darawardi in various ways, and the version I have given is the most correct. Daraqutni also favored it in Al-Ilal (1173).As for Abu Zura, he favored what Abu Walid Tayalisi narrated, from Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad (that is, Darawardi), from Amr bin Amr, from Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi, from Abu Rafi, from the Prophet ﷺ. That is what he said, but it appears that a name has dropped out of this chain, and the correct version is, from Abdullah bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi, from his father, from Abu Rafi.
