When Ibn Ziyad and Marwan were in Syria, Ibn Zubayr had risen up in Mecca, and the reciters had risen up in Basra, I went with my father to Abu Barza al-Aslami until we entered upon him in his house. He was sitting in the shade of an upper room of his made of reeds. We sat down with him, and my father began drawing him into conversation. He said, "Abu Barza, do you not see what the people have fallen into?"The first thing I heard him say in response was, "I seek reward from Allah for the fact that I have come to feel anger toward the tribes of Quraysh. You Arabs were in the condition you know well, of humiliation, scarcity, and misguidance, and Allah rescued you through Islam and through Muhammad ﷺ until He brought you to what you now see. It is this worldly life that has corrupted matters between you. As for that one in Syria, by Allah, he fights only for the sake of this world."
Bukhari reported it in the chapter on tribulations (7112), from Ahmad bin Yunus, who said, Abu Shihab narrated to us, from Awf, from Abu Minhal, and he related it.
