Huzaifa bin Yaman reported,

We were with Umar when he asked, "Which of you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the trials?"Some people said, "We heard him."Umar said, "Perhaps you mean the trial a man faces concerning his family and his neighbor?"They replied, "Yes."He said, "Those are wiped away by prayer, fasting, and charity. But which of you heard the Prophet ﷺ mention the trials that surge like the waves of the sea?"Hudhayfah said, The people fell silent, so I said, "I did."Umar said, "You? May your father be devoted to Allah!"Hudhayfah said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Trials are presented to hearts one after another, like the strands of a reed mat. Whichever heart absorbs them, a black mark is imprinted upon it, and whichever heart rejects them, a white mark is imprinted upon it, until hearts become of two kinds. One is white like a smooth stone, which no trial can harm so long as the heavens and the earth endure. The other is black and dust-colored, like an overturned vessel, recognizing no good and rejecting no evil, except what its desires have absorbed."

عن حذيفة بن اليمان قال

كنا عند عمر، فقال: أيكم سمع رسول الله ﷺ يذكر الفتن؟ قال قوم: نحن سمعناه، فقال: لعلكم تعنون فتنة الرجل في أهله وجاره؟ قالوا: أجل، قال: تلك تكفرها الصلاة والصيام والصدقة، ولكن أيكم سمع النبي ﷺ يذكر الفتن التي تموج موج البحر، قال حذيفة: فأسكت القوم فقلت: أنا، قال: أنت لله أبوك، قال حذيفة: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: تعرض الفتن على القلوب كالحصير عودا عودا، فأي قلب أشربها نكت فيه نكتة سوداء، وأي قلب أنكرها، نكت فيه نكتة بيضاء، حتى تصير على قلبين، على أبيض مثل الصفا، فلا تضره فتنة ما دامت السماوات والأرض، والآخر أسود مربادا كالكوز مجخيا لا يعرف معروفا ولا ينكر منكرا، إلا ما أشرب من هواه.
