There was a dispute between a man from the people of Uqba and Hudhayfa, the kind of disagreement that occurs between people. The man said, "I implore you by Allah, how many were the people of Uqba?"The people present said to Hudhayfa, "Tell him, since he has asked you."Hudhayfa said, "We were told they were fourteen. If you were one of them, then the group numbered fifteen. I bear witness by Allah that twelve of them are at war with Allah and His Messenger in this worldly life and on the Day when the witnesses will arise. As for three, they were excused. They said, 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor did we know what the group intended.'"He had been in a lava field, walking, when he said, "The water is scarce, so let no one reach it before me." But he found that some people had already gotten there ahead of him, and on that day he cursed them.
Muslim narrated it in the Chapter on the Attributes of the Hypocrites (2879:11), from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Abu Ahmad Kufi told us, who said, Walid bin Jami told us, who said, Abu Tufayl told us, and he related it.His words, "the companions of the pass," Nawawi said, this pass is not the well-known pass at Mina where the pledge of the Ansar took place. Rather, this is a pass on the road to Tabuk, where the hypocrites gathered to treacherously attack the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Battle of Tabuk, but Allah protected him from them.
