The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "How will you fare, Abdullah, if you remain among the dregs of mankind?"Abdullah asked, "What do you mean by that, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "That is when their covenants and trusts become corrupted, and they become like this," and he interlaced his fingers.Abdullah asked, "What should I do then, Messenger of Allah?"He answered, "Act on what you know to be right, leave what you know to be wrong, attend to your own affairs, and leave aside the affairs of the masses."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: كيف أنت يا عبد الله لو بقيت في حثالة من الناس؟ قال: وذاك ما هم يا رسول الله؟ قال: ذاك إذا مرجت عهودهم وأماناتهم، وصاروا هكذا وشبك بين أصابعه قال: فكيف بي يا رسول الله؟ قال: تعمل بما تعرف، وتدع ما تنكر، وتعمل بخاصة نفسك وتدع عوام الناس.
Ibn Hibban (5950) narrated it from Hasan bin Sufyan, who said, Umaya bin Bistam narrated to us, who said, Yazid bin Zuray narrated to us, who said, Rawh bin Qasim narrated to us, from Ala, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who said, and then he related it.Abdullah here is Ibn Amr bin As, and he is the one whom the Prophet ﷺ addressed. Abu Hurairah was present and heard it himself as well, or he heard it from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, since the companions would narrate from one another, as is well known.His saying, "Stay in your house," means do not take part in the strife, but he is permitted to go out to earn his living or for other purposes. It does not contain a prohibition against attending Friday prayer or the congregational prayers, as some ignorant worshippers have understood, those who have taken up for themselves khanqahs like the monastic cells and monasteries of the Jews and Christians, and the caves and mountains of the Hindu ascetics.
