When the matter of the lower garment was mentioned, she asked, "And what about a woman, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "She lets it hang down a hand span."Umm Salama said, "Then it will still expose her."He said, "Then a forearm's length, no more than that."
أنها قالت حين ذكر الإزار: فالمرأة يا رسول الله؟ قال: ترخيه شبرا، قالت أم سلمة: إذا ينكشف عنها. قال: فذراعا لا تزيد عليه.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Clothing (13) from Abu Bakr bin Nafi, from his father Nafi, the freed slave of Ibn Umar, from Safiya bint Abu Ubayd, who informed him from Umm Salama, and he related it.From this same route, Abu Dawud narrated it (4117), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5451). This hadith has many routes, and the correct one is as Malik narrated it. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Bakr bin Nafi, whom Abu Dawud deemed reliable, though Ibn Main's statement about him varied. Duri reported from Ibn Main, "There is no harm in him," but at another time he said, "He is nothing." Ibn Adi said, "Were it not that there is no harm in him, Malik would not have narrated from him, for Malik narrates only from a trustworthy person. Others besides Malik have narrated from Abu Bakr bin Nafi things that are not preserved, but I hope he is truthful, with no harm in him." Abu Ahmad Hakim said, "I have not been able to confirm his name, though it is said he is trustworthy," and he has been corroborated.Ahmad narrated it (26532) through the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and Nasai (5338) through the hadith of Ayub bin Musa, both of them from Nafi, from Safiya bint Abu Ubayd, from Umm Salama, and he related it.
