Umm Habiba bint Jahsh, the sister-in-law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the wife of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, sought the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said, "I experience prolonged bleeding."He replied, "That is only a vein. Perform a full bath, then pray."So she used to bathe before every prayer.Layth bin Saad said, Ibn Shihab Zuhri did not mention that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Umm Habiba bint Jahsh to bathe before every prayer. Rather, that was something she did on her own.In another narration, she suffered prolonged bleeding for seven years and sought the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is not menstruation. It is only a vein, so perform a full bath and pray."Ayesha said, "She used to bathe in a basin in the room of her sister Zaynab bint Jahsh until the redness of the blood would overcome the water."Ibn Shihab said, I related this to Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, and he said, "May Allah have mercy on Hind! If only she had heard of this ruling. By Allah, she used to weep because she could not pray."In another narration, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Wait the length of time your menses normally used to detain you, then perform a full bath and pray."
All these narrations were recorded by Muslim in the chapter on Menstruation (334), and Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Menstruation (327) in a shortened form, that Umm Habiba suffered from prolonged bleeding for seven years, so she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, and he instructed her to bathe, saying, "This is from a vein." So she would bathe before every prayer. In Sunan Abu Dawud (281), "He instructed her to abandon prayer during the days of her menstrual periods."His statement, "May Allah have mercy on Hind," mentions her this way without attaching any lineage, and likewise Ibn Hajar mentioned her in Isaba (12010), saying, "Hind, without lineage."It has become clear to me that she was Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, whose name was Hind bint Abu Umaya Makhzumiya Quryashiya. She was well known by her kunya and recognized by her given name. She is mentioned among the women who suffered from prolonged bleeding during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and perhaps that was before she married the Prophet ﷺ. When she sought a ruling from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning a woman who was experiencing heavy bleeding, she learned that such a woman should abandon prayer for the length of that month, and once that period had passed, she should bathe and then pray. She used to feel sorrow over what she had done before receiving this ruling. The one who narrated from her, Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith, was also a Makhzumi. Her statement, "She would bathe before every prayer," reflects her own understanding . That is why Shafii said, "The Messenger of Allah only instructed her to bathe and pray, there is nothing in it indicating that he instructed her to bathe before every prayer." He said, "I have no doubt, if Allah Most High wills, that her bathing was voluntary, beyond what she had been instructed to do, and that was permissible for her." Umm (1/62). Sufyan bin Uyayna, Layth bin Saad, and others said the same.
