I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "If the son of Adam had a valley full of wealth, he would wish to have another like it. Nothing fills the soul of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah turns in mercy to whoever turns to Him in repentance."In another wording, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would seek a third. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah turns in mercy to whoever turns to Him in repentance."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: لو أن لابن آدم ملء واد مالا لأحب أن يكون إليه مثله، ولا يملأ نفس ابن آدم إلا التراب، والله يتوب على من تاب. وفي لفظ: لو كان لابن آدم واديان من مال لابتغى ثالثا، ولا يملأ جوف ابن آدم إلا التراب، ويتوب الله على من تاب.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Softening of Hearts (6437), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1049), both of them through two paths from Ibn Jurayj, who said, I heard Ataa say, I heard Ibn Abbas say, and then he mentioned it. Ibn Abbas said, "I do not know whether this is from the Quran or not." He said, "And I heard Ibn Zubayr say that from the pulpit." This is in Sahih Bukhari.As for Sahih Muslim, he related it from two teachers, Zuhayr bin Harb and Harun bin Abdullah. Muslim said, "In the narration of Zuhayr, he said, 'I do not know whether it is from the Quran,' without mentioning Ibn Abbas."The meaning of this is that there is disagreement over this statement being attributed to Ibn Abbas, and it appears that it is not the statement of Ibn Abbas, but rather the statement of Ibn Zubayr.The second wording, Bukhari related it (6436) from Abu Asim, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ataa, with it.
