One of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ wanted something from her while she was menstruating, he would place a cloth over her private area.
عن بعض أزواج النبي ﷺ أن النبي ﷺ كان إذا أراد من الحائض شيئا ألقى على فرجها ثوبا.
Abu Dawud narrated it (272), saying, Musa bin Ismail told us, Hammad told us, from Ayub, from Ikrima, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain of transmission is sahih.See also the hadith of Abdullah bin Saad Ansari in "The Chapter on Wudu After Madhi."As for the well-known hadith from Ibn Abbas about a man who has intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, in which he said he should give a dinar or half a dinar in charity, it has a hidden defect, and the correct view is that it is a statement of Ibn Abbas alone rather than one traced back to the Prophet.Likewise, the hadith of Umar bin Khattab, that he had intercourse with his wife while she was menstruating, and came to the Prophet ﷺ, who commanded him to give two-fifths of a dinar or half a dinar in charity, also has a hidden defect.See the detailed discussion of this in Minna Kubra (1/218).
