I was the first Arab to shoot an arrow in the cause of Allah. Now the tribe of Banu Asad presumes to instruct me in Islam? I would indeed be a failure, and my deeds would be lost.They had reported him to Umar, saying, "He does not pray properly."
إني لأول العرب رمى بسهم في سبيل الله، وكنا نغزو مع النبي ﷺ وما لنا طعام إلا ورق الشجر حتى إن أحدنا ليضع كما يضع البعير أو الشاة ما له خلط، ثم أصبحت بنو أسد تعزرني على الإسلام، لقد خبت إذا، وضل عملي، وكانوا وشوا به إلى عمر قالوا: لا يحسن يصلي.
Bukhari related it in the Virtues of the Companions (3728), and Muslim in Asceticism and Softening of Hearts (2966), both through routes from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Qays, who said, "I heard Saad bin Abu Waqqas," and he related it. The wording given here is Bukhari's, and Muslim's version does not mention the accusation of misconduct. His saying, "You correct me," means you set me straight and teach me, from which comes the ruler's disciplinary correction, meaning setting someone straight through punishment.
